Prostate problems is a common ailment that faces men at pension time, most men encounter a problem of a swollen prostate after the age of sixty and nearly all of them over the age of eighty are suffering from a swollen prostate gland.

The prostate gland is situated around the male sexual organ and can be palpated by inserting a finger in the rectum and pointing to the front. With a little massaging in this area you will be able to palpate the prostate.

In normal cases, after the age of 50, you are advised to undergo this test regularly. It is performed by the doctor at the clinic using a lubricated glove, if you feel embarrassed with this procedure then you may want to undergo it once then carry it yourself during shower time regularly to keep track of the changes that may occur.

If you encounter any changes in the size or the temperature in this are then you need to see a doctor immediately. In case your doctor finds out that your prostate is swollen then he will ask for some tests to make sure of the case whether it is a benign or malignant tumor.

The normal tests are blood picture, urine sample analysis and ceratinine test. These tests are required to find out if there are any changes in the blood PSA and other indications that occur in association of malignant tumors or prostate cancer.

If the tests are insignificant, your doctor may want to exclude other problems of kidney or urinary bladder by endoscopy. In this test a small, flexible and fine catheter is inserted in the urethra to examine the area for significant symptoms to identify the real cause of your symptoms.

The last test is prostate biopsy where the doctor is going to take a tiny sample of your prostate using a fine long needle for pathological test to make sure about your case. A swollen prostate does not mean that it is a malignant tumor and in most cases it is a benign swelling that can be treated with normal medication and massaging, in some cases if the swollen part of the prostate gland interferes with the urination or the erection of the male sex organ, it is advised to undergo a simple surgery procedure to remove the swollen part of the gland and leave the normal part intact.

Checking your prostate regularly is the best way to keep track of any changes and detect it when they occur for the first time.
